The Commonwealth
Flyfishing Championships were held 19th to 23rd
September 2006 in Wales and the England Ladies Flyfishing
Association are proud to have competed in the event. The event
is open to all Commonwealth countries who wish to participate and
the following countries were represented this year: Australai (2
teams), Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Isle of Man, England (3
teams including the ladies), Scotland (2 teams including a ladies
team), Wales (2 teams); 13 teams in all.
The competition was
fished on both the river Dee (Maelor and Llnagollen stretches) and
Llyn Brenig. Each of the 65 competitors were placed into 5 groups of
11 anglers, and each of them fished 5 sessions over 2 days, 3
sessions on the river of 2 hour duration and 2 sessions on Llyn
Brenig of 3 hours duration. The results over the three sessions
would give the overall individual and team results.
Practice days were
held on the Corwen stretch of the river Dee and on Llyn Brenig,
however the first day on Brenig was almost blown off due to high
winds and very few competitors went on the water. Of those that did
venture out in boats that day were the team from the Isle of Man, no
puns on their ability to be stable in boats in rough weather due to
having three legs! The weather, contrary to all forecasts did however
remain dry and the wind abated to a reasonable level for the second
practise day and competition days (22nd and 23rd
September). Some very good brown trout sand grayling were caught and
the most notable individual catch was by Kieron Jenkins with 19 fish
on the river Dee in 2 hours (Kieron currently fishes for the Welsh
youth team).
The main tactics on
the river were small dry flies and duo fishing and the main catches
on Llyn Brenig came from the top of the lake towards the ring of
stones and from the quarry and woods areas. |
